Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, bans PowerPoint presentations in his meetings. And for good reason, because PowerPoint is not a management tool! PowerPoint is purely a visualization tool. Nothing more and nothing less.
Here are a few tips for preparing a successful presentation in important meetings:
1) Start with the goal of your presentation. Incidentally, a goal should be more than “just” informing. For example, how about convincing investors or management to invest in an innovative project?
2) Analyze your audience. Their interests and fears are crucial. Not forgetting the social and psychological elements: Who are the ‘keypersons’ in the management? What makes them tick? Are they more risk-averse and focused on facts and costs? Or visionaries with a focus on long-term success without wanting to get lost in the details?
3) Your goal and the audience now determine the content. What is the headline you want to use to convince your audience? Try it now with a 3-minute story.
